State Rep. Sue Allor, of Wolverine, today said a veto from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer hurts families and job providers at a time of critical need.

Allor said the governor’s veto essentially eliminates a six-week extension of unemployment benefits. The extension of benefits included in Senate Bill 604, which the governor signed, was contingent upon the $220 million she vetoed.

“The governor’s veto once again displays inconsistency in her decision making, in this case putting an end to the extension of unemployment benefits which the Legislature had just approved with overwhelming support from Democrats and Republicans alike,” Allor said. “Michiganders throughout the state are hurting enough as it is; now, they’ve been dealt another blow by our governor. How she can praise a bipartisan plan to extend unemployment benefits, while slashing the very funds set aside to enact it, is confounding and shameful.”

 Allor also said she was disappointed by the governor’s statement that the Legislature’s budget measure ‘went too far’ and that the rejected portion didn’t have anything to do with extending unemployment benefits.

 The Representative said she is concerned with the Governor’s innuendo that businesses will have to pay additional monies into the UIA fund to keep it viable – the same businesses that are operating in the red, on the verge of closing, or close to bankruptcy.

“This is unacceptable!” said Allor, “Our hometown businesses that were forced to cease or reduce operations, through no fault of their own, should not be held liable for unemployment paid to employees. Michigan’s economy can’t survive this Governor’s reckless actions for much longer. Enough is enough!”
