Rep. Bellino responds to EGLE’s approval of permits for Line 5 tunnel
RELEASE|January 29, 2021

State Rep. Joe Bellino, of Monroe, today said he’s pleased the Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy has approved a pair of permits required to build a utility tunnel for the Line 5 pipeline in the Straits of Mackinac.

“This is major news for families across Michigan,” Bellino said. “As chair of the House Energy Committee, I’ve been outspoken from the beginning about my concerns if Line 5 were to shut down. The line carries 23 million gallons of crude oil and natural gas liquids every day, with hundreds of thousands of residents across Michigan relying on the pipeline for propane to heat their homes.”

Rep. Bellino said he hopes this permit approval from the Whitmer administration is a sign the governor is beginning to understand the importance of the tunnel. He said it is the most practical plan for protecting our precious Great Lakes while also continuing to deliver critical resources.

“This isn’t only smart from an environmental perspective, but it’s incredible how many good paying union jobs it’ll create,” Bellino said. “You can count on that. And to know Enbridge will be funding the project in total – approximately $500 million – it’s a total win all around.”
