State Rep. John Roth has been appointed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to a panel promoting and providing information on the COVID-19 vaccine as doses are made available to Michigan.

Roth, a first-term lawmaker from Traverse City, will be joined by three other legislators on the Protect Michigan Commission. They are state Sen. Curt VanderWall of Ludington, state Sen. Winnie Brinks of Grand Rapids and state Rep. Felicia Brabec of Ann Arbor.

The commission also includes members of Whitmer’s administration, prominent figures such as former Lt. Gov. Brian Calley and Detroit Pistons player Blake Griffin, and representatives from key Michigan-based groups and associations.

“This is an important role in ensuring Northern Michigan and our entire state have access to this lifesaving vaccine,” Roth said. “Making sure people are informed on the vaccine, where to get it, when they can get it and other pertinent details will give people a process they can trust and depend on as we go through this unprecedented time in our state’s history.”

According to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, the state has over 550,000 COVID-19 cases as of Monday and over 14,000 deaths. In Grand Traverse County, DHHS has confirmed nearly 3,500 cases and 50 deaths as of Monday.
