Rep. Roth outlines upcoming changes to state’s work search requirements
RELEASE|May 28, 2021
Contact: John Roth

With work search requirements approaching, state Rep. John Roth is helping people and employers throughout Grand Traverse County understand updated policies.

Michigan residents receiving unemployment benefits will have to show they are actively searching for work starting May 30 – a restoration of a previous policy that had been suspended in March 2020 due to a surge in COVID-19 cases and executive orders in response. To remain eligible for benefits, claimants will once again have to report work search activity to Michigan’s Unemployment Insurance Agency. The requirement of one search activity per week can include submitting a job application, interviewing for a job, attending a job fair or other related activities.

“As shots continue to go into arms, case counts fall and work guidelines from the CDC are relaxed, Michigan is getting going again and getting back to work,” said Roth, of Traverse City. “It is critical that we re-emerge from COVID-19 with a healthy population and a healthy economy. It’s an exciting time as there are many good-paying jobs and livelihoods out there for people across the state.”

Roth noted that key, practical exemptions remain in place for search requirements. Those who are unable to work due to COVID-19 or parents with children attending school remotely because in-person learning is not available are included in these exemptions. Benefits are also available until Sept. 4 through federal extensions.

The updated policy also has an impact on employers, who will need to report through their MiWAM account if a new hire is not present or if a job offer has been turned down.

Roth invites people to visit the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity’s website for additional information on the requirements. Job postings are also available at MiTalent.org.
