Rep. Wakeman announces President’s approval of federal emergency declaration
RELEASE|July 10, 2020

Rep. Rodney Wakeman this week thanked the President for his approval of a federal emergency declaration in Midland and surrounding counties due to severe flooding.

“Thousands of lives have been completely devastated after several area dams collapsed a couple months ago,” Wakeman said. “Residents have had to flee their homes and businesses because of this crisis, left not knowing what to do next.

“I am deeply grateful to the President, governor, and Congressman Moolenaar for their work ensuring assistance will be guaranteed for our community. Between the COVID-19 pandemic and the horrendous damage caused by the flooding, local families have faced unprecedented challenges for months. I am glad to see we are moving in the right direction toward recovery.”

Wakeman said the federal declaration will also clear the way for legislation he supported to bring an additional $6 million in state flood relief funding to mid-Michigan, which passed the House last month by a vote of 107-1 and is awaiting action in the state Senate.

Wakeman said Trump’s order authorizes the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to coordinate all disaster relief efforts which have the purpose of alleviating the hardship and suffering caused by the emergency on the local population, and to provide appropriate assistance to save lives and to protect property, public health and safety, and to lessen or avert the threat of any further catastrophe in Saginaw County.
