Rep. LaFave issues statement on terrorist attack on Line 5
RELEASE|October 20, 2021

House Military, Veterans, and Homeland Security Committee Chair Beau LaFave, of Iron Mountain, today issued the following statement after a group of terrorists attempted to shut down Line 5 at a valve site outside of Vassar in Tuscola County on Tuesday. One suspect breached a security fence and used a wrench to close the valve. Three people were detained by law enforcement:

“Yesterday we experienced a domestic terrorist attack in Michigan. I demand Attorney General Dana Nessel prosecute those who illegally breached this facility and anyone who touched the wrench used against the pipeline. Both are felony offenses under state law.

“Irrational rhetoric from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, as well as a senseless lawsuit to shut down Line 5 by Department of Natural Resources Director Daniel Eichinger, in no small part led to the events that unfolded in Tuscola County. Attorney General Nessel has not helped by refusing to release their names or demanding justice be carried out swiftly. Extremists were emboldened by their rhetoric and if justice is not served, what’s to stop it from happening again?

“The brave men and women in law enforcement and at Enbridge deserve our appreciation for ending this attack. Now it is the job of the attorney general to ensure the perpetrators are punished to the fullest extent of the law.”
