State Rep. Ron Robinson today voted in support of a plan aimed at lowering energy bills and strengthening reliability for Michigan families struggling with higher monthly costs.
“I hear it all the time when I’m out talking with people in our community,” said Robinson (R-Utica). “Families are stretched thin. Groceries cost more. Insurance costs more. Housing costs more. Utility bills keep climbing. People want practical solutions that make life more affordable.”
The plan makes several major changes to Michigan’s energy policy:
- It requires the Michigan Public Service Commission to prioritize affordability and reliability when making decisions about rates and energy projects
- ends costly mandates that force utility companies to make decisions based on political ideology instead of what works best for Michigan
- stops millions of dollars from being taken out of utility bills and redirected toward outside political activist groups
- streamlines the process for building and upgrading energy infrastructure to strengthen the grid, reduce outages, and support future economic growth
- allows utilities to invest in energy sources that provide dependable power at the best price for consumers.
“We are righting the ship,” Robinson said. “This is a serious, top-to-bottom reset of Michigan’s energy policy that puts affordability and reliability first for families, workers, and job providers.”
Robinson said the energy reforms are part of a broader affordability agenda he is helping lead through the House Republican HELP-UP plan. The plan would lower property taxes by $5 billion statewide and require utility companies to pass $1 billion in tax savings back to customers through a rate rollback. Combined with the energy reforms approved today, the proposals would save the average Michigan family roughly $1,400 each year.
“We’re focused on the biggest costs hitting Michigan families every month and taking real action to bring those costs down,” Robinson said. “This plan is about putting people over politics and making Michigan more affordable again.”
