State Rep. Donni Steele today introduced House Resolution 252 designating March as Women’s History Month in the state of Michigan.
“This designation honors the women whose courage, determination, and leadership have helped shape our communities, expand opportunity, and inspire future generations,” said Steele (Orion Township).
Steele said trailblazers like Boston Marathon champion Nina Kuscsik remind us how progress is made. At a time when women were not officially permitted to run the race, Kuscsik showed extraordinary courage by competing anyway.
When women were finally allowed to compete in 1972, she became the first official female champion. Steele said Ms. Kuscsik’s story reflects the determination of women who forged forward and created new opportunities for the generations that followed. Prior to the enactment of Title IX, only 1 in 27 girls participated in high school sports; by 2016, that number had risen to 1 in 5.
“Women’s History Month is about more than looking back. It is about honoring women who continue to fight for fair opportunities and make sure that the next generation has every chance to succeed,” said Steele. “I work alongside strong women every day, and marvel at the impact women make in our families, workplaces, and communities. Recognizing that legacy is deeply meaningful to me.”
“Steele said she remains committed to honoring trailblazers like Nina Kuscsik by advocating for policies that protect and support female athletes, preserve fairness in women’s sports, and ensure the next generation of girls has every opportunity to compete and succeed.”
